"Rare Heritage Livestock Breeds"
Rare heritage breeds, like the Scottish Highland, have not had the intensive human selection for the fast growth that is characteristic of the last 50 years of animal breeding. Older breeds still retain some of the more primitive, rugged and self-sufficient characteristics of their undomesticated ancesters. Self-sufficiency makes these animals undesirable for factory farms. These farms depend on high-input, high-output systems with lots of care and maintenance. In exchange, factory farms want rapid development and high production rates.
The ability of rare heritage breeds to thrive in a variety of conditions without a lot of human intervention makes breeds, like the Scottish Highland, a perfect choice for small landholders, hobby farmers, and small family farms.
