Foxtail Farmstead Story and Photographs
Our farm story began in 1999. Teri and I (Greg) just wanted to raise a couple of beef cattle for our own food. We had grown leery of where the beef comes from in stores, what they are fed, and how they are treated.
We had little experience in raising animals and certainly did not have much in the way of facilities. (This was before the farm you see above.)
There was a nice article in Country Journal -April 1999 (no longer published). It was about raising rare breeds of livestock and focused on why small farmers were beginning to raise rare breeds of livestock.
Traveling to visit breeders, we saw how easy it is to work with Scottish Highland Cattle. There is no expensive barns and facilities required. They calve easily with small calves and no assistance. They were just what we were looking for, low maintenance.
In the summer 2000, we purchased 2 calves to be weaned at the end of the year. In early fall, we heard about a nice bull and 2 cow calf pairs that the owner could not longer care for. That nice bull, Wildflower Mandrake, is now 14 years old and still capable of breeding cows. He is the sire of many of the cows in our herd today. Even at his advanced age, he is still active and very mild mannered. This is unheard of in many cattle breeds.
Some people wonder where our farm name came from. Our farm is named after a native grass, foxtail, that grows everywhere on our original property.
In the fall of 2003, we moved to another farm (the one you see above) solely because our fold had outgrown our property. Our original interest in Highands had become a passion. Their majestic beauty, unique personalties, and easy to manage temperment are not the only reasons we love them. They simply produce the best beef I have ever eaten.
Today our Highland fold currently consists of over 60 Highlands in a variety of colors - Light to Dark Red, Black, Dun, White, and Brindle.
